解释而非道歉,辩护而非反省
Reach for parallel 而非 constructions when you want to land a sharp rhetorical contrast — naming what someone IS doing while underlining what they're NOT doing. 而非 means 'rather than / and not,' and stacking two parallel pairs back-to-back ('解释而非道歉, 辩护而非反省') creates a tight, accusatory rhythm beloved by op-ed writers and commentators. Use it to characterize behavior in a precise, slightly damning way.
Structure
[ACTION A] 而非 [EXPECTED ACTION A] , [ACTION B] 而非 [EXPECTED ACTION B]
... ér fēi ... , ... ér fēi ...
How to Think About It
而非 sits between what's happening and what should be happening, and the contrast is morally loaded — 'explaining rather than apologizing' isn't neutral; it implies the speaker thinks apology was the right move. Doubling the construction in parallel pairs the way commentators do ('A 而非 X, B 而非 Y') creates a drumbeat effect: two precise critiques, same grammatical shape, twice the punch. The pattern works best when both pairs follow the same logical line — don't mix in a third unrelated contrast.
Examples
他选择了沉默而非对抗。
Tā xuǎnzé le chénmò ér fēi duìkàng.
He chose silence rather than confrontation.
我们需要的是行动而非空谈。
Wǒmen xūyào de shì xíngdòng ér fēi kōngtán.
What we need is action rather than empty talk.
她的回应是逃避而非面对, 是辩解而非承担。
Tā de huíyìng shì táobì ér fēi miànduì, shì biànjiě ér fēi chéngdān.
Her response was evasion rather than confrontation, justification rather than taking responsibility.
Common Mistake
Learners insert 是 before 而非 ('是解释而非是道歉') by analogy with 是...不是... structures. But 而非 is a fixed connector and doesn't need 是 — adding it makes the sentence clunky and slightly ungrammatical in this register.
他是解释而非是道歉。
他解释而非道歉。
Don't Confuse With
而不是
而不是 is the everyday spoken version of 而非 — same meaning, casual register. Use 而非 in essays, op-eds, and formal commentary; use 而不是 in conversation and informal writing.
不是...而是...
Flips the order: first deny ('not X'), then assert ('but Y'). 而非 places the assertion first and the denial second. Same logic, opposite order — the rhythm and emphasis differ.
与其...不如...
与其...不如... compares two options and prefers one ('rather than X, better to Y'). 而非 describes what IS the case versus what isn't — no preference is offered, just a sharp distinction.
