Reach for this when the first impression of an idea — whether you heard it, read it, or saw it described — is misleading, and you want to flag the gap. 听起来 frames information that came in by ear or by description ('sounds simple,' 'sounds crazy'); 看起来 frames visual or general impressions ('looks easy'). Either way, 其实 then delivers the actual story. The everyday tool for 'sounds like sci-fi, actually it's middle-school biology' moves.
Structure
tīng qǐlái / kàn qǐlái ..., qíshí ...
How to Think About It
Pick 听起来 vs 看起来 by asking how the impression got in. If someone TOLD you something or you read it, that's 听起来 ('sounds like'). If you saw it or have a general visual sense, that's 看起来 ('looks like'). Both pair with 其实 to deliver the reveal. Mixing them up isn't ungrammatical, but native speakers will notice — picking the right channel makes the sentence feel sharp.
Examples

Common Mistake
Learners use 看起来 for an idea they only heard described, treating it as a generic 'seems.' Use 听起来 when the input came in by ear or words. 'This idea sounds crazy' = 这个想法听起来很疯狂, not 这个想法看起来很疯狂.
这个想法看起来很疯狂, 其实很合理。
这个想法听起来很疯狂, 其实很合理。
Don't Confuse With
The visual-only version of this same reveal pattern. Use 看起来 when you can literally see the thing; 听起来 when the impression came from someone describing it.
More analytical and written. 表面上看 frames an angle of analysis; 听起来 / 看起来 frames a sensory or first impression.
好像 means 'seems / it's as if' — softer, more tentative. 听起来 / 看起来 commits to a specific channel of impression; 好像 is the catch-all hedge.
