X 不是 ... 不是 ... 不是 ...
Use this when you want to rule out a list of options before naming the real thing — or before admitting you don't know. Three (or more) parallel 不是 clauses sweep through possibilities the listener might be thinking of: 'not a plane, not a bird, not anything we recognize.' Common in mystery-framing in news, storytelling, and explanations where the writer narrows toward the answer by eliminating the alternatives.
Structure
[X] 不是 [A]，不是 [B]，不是 [C]，(... + 而是 / + 是什么呢)
... bú shì ..., bú shì ..., bú shì ...
How to Think About It
The repetition is the whole point. Two 不是 clauses feel like a normal contrast (not A, not B). Three or more turn it into a deliberate elimination — the speaker is performing the search out loud so the listener feels the puzzle. The structure can either land on a reveal (...而是 X) or trail off into a question (...那到底是什么？), depending on whether the speaker has the answer. Use it for dramatic effect; using it for ordinary contrasts (two items would do) sounds overwrought.

这种感觉不是开心，不是难过，不是愤怒。
zhè zhǒng gǎnjué bú shì kāixīn, bú shì nánguò, bú shì fènnù.
This feeling isn't happiness, isn't sadness, isn't anger.
他不是医生，不是护士，不是警察，他是一个老师。
tā bú shì yīshēng, bú shì hùshi, bú shì jǐngchá, tā shì yí gè lǎoshī.
He's not a doctor, not a nurse, not a police officer — he's a teacher.
我要的不是钱，不是名声，不是关注。
wǒ yào de bú shì qián, bú shì míngshēng, bú shì guānzhù.
What I want is not money, not fame, not attention.
Common Mistake
Learners write 不是 X，不是 Y，但是 Z, treating the final reveal like a contrast with 但是. The natural connector for the reveal is 而是 (rather), which fits the parallel rhythm. 但是 introduces a contradiction; 而是 completes the elimination by naming the surviving option.
不是飞机，不是鸟，但是我们不知道是什么。
不是飞机，不是鸟，也不是我们认识的任何东西。
Don't Confuse With
不是...而是...
Two-item version — single replacement. Use when you have one wrong claim and one right one. Stretch to three+ items when you want mystery or rhetorical buildup.
既不...也不...
'Neither X nor Y.' Compact, formal, only two items. The X 不是...不是...不是... pattern is looser, longer, and used for dramatic effect.
无论是...还是...
Universal sweep that AFFIRMS all options (无论是A还是B都...). The 不是 chain NEGATES all options.
