X 是 ... 的地方
Reach for this when you want to define a place by what happens there — 'X is the place where ...' or 'X is where ...' It's the standard way to identify a location functionally rather than by name. Common in explanations ('a company is where many people work together'), definitions, and rhetorical points ('that's where it gets complicated'). The 的地方 carries the meaning 'the place that,' and the clause before 的 describes what defines the place.

How to Think About It
的地方 turns any verb phrase into a noun — 'the place where (that verb phrase happens).' So 公司是很多人一起做事的地方 literally builds the noun 'a-many-people-doing-things-together place,' then equates X to it. The whole thing on the left of 的 is one big adjective for 地方. Once you see 的地方 as a noun factory, the pattern becomes effortless.

图书馆是看书的地方。
Túshūguǎn shì kàn shū de dìfang.
The library is a place for reading.
这就是问题最复杂的地方。
Zhè jiùshì wèntí zuì fùzá de dìfang.
This is exactly where the problem is most complicated.
义乌是世界上小商品最多的地方。
Yìwū shì shìjiè shang xiǎo shāngpǐn zuì duō de dìfang.
Yiwu is the place in the world with the most small commodities.
Common Mistake
Learners drop 的 or put 地方 inside the clause instead of after. The 的 has to glue the description to 地方 at the end; otherwise the relative-clause structure breaks.

Don't Confuse With
在 [PLACE] [VERB]
Use 在 + place + verb when you're stating where an action happens. X 是...的地方 defines what kind of place X is.
[X] 是 [Y]
X 是 Y is for naming or categorizing (X is a Y). X 是...的地方 specifically defines X by the activity that happens there.
...的时候
Same structure with 的, but with 时候 the result is a time clause ('when...'). With 地方, it's a place clause ('where...').
