不靠X,靠Y
Reach for this when you want to reject one strategy or means and assert a better one in its place — 'not by X, but by Y.' It's the language of positioning: how a company wins, how a person succeeds, how a movement spreads. The verb 靠 means 'to rely on,' so the structure literally says 'doesn't rely on X, relies on Y.' Common in business writing, brand manifestos, op-eds, and any sentence where the speaker is contrasting cheap tactics with deeper strategy.
Structure
不靠 [REJECTED MEANS],靠 [PREFERRED MEANS]

How to Think About It
靠 isn't 'use' — it's 'lean on, depend on for support.' So the pattern frames X and Y as load-bearing strategies, not just methods. That's why it carries weight: you're saying the whole thing stands on Y, not X. The two halves must be parallel means to the same end (winning attention, growing a business, building trust) — if Y is a different goal rather than a different method, the pattern collapses.
Examples
他不靠关系,靠实力。
Tā bú kào guānxi, kào shílì.
He doesn't rely on connections — he relies on ability.
这家公司不靠广告,靠口碑。
Zhè jiā gōngsī bú kào guǎnggào, kào kǒubēi.
This company doesn't grow through ads — it grows through word of mouth.
真正的好朋友,不靠见面多,靠互相理解。
Zhēnzhèng de hǎo péngyǒu, bú kào jiànmiàn duō, kào hùxiāng lǐjiě.
Real friendship doesn't depend on seeing each other often — it depends on mutual understanding.
Common Mistake
Learners drop 靠 in the second half, treating the pattern like 不是…而是…. But 靠 must repeat — it's the verb that makes the structure work. Without the second 靠, you get a sentence fragment because there's no verb to govern Y.
不靠运气,努力。
不靠运气,靠努力。
Don't Confuse With
不是X,而是Y
Corrects an identity claim — 'it's not X, it's Y.' 不靠…靠… is specifically about means and methods. Compare: 他不是老师,而是工程师 (identity) vs 他不靠运气,靠实力 (method).
与其X,不如Y
Compares two options the subject could choose — 'rather than X, better to Y.' It's deliberative. 不靠…靠… states a fact about how something actually works or should work.
凭X
凭 means 'by virtue of, on the strength of' — singular and assertive (凭实力 = 'on raw ability'). 不靠…靠… contrasts two options; 凭 just names one without rejecting an alternative.
