比你想象的要...
Reach for this when you want to tell someone their mental picture is off — usually understated — and the reality is bigger. Common in commentary, reviews, news framing, and persuasive writing. The phrase compares the actual situation to the listener's existing expectation, and the 要 softly emphasizes that the gap is real and worth noticing.
Structure
比你想象的要 [ADJ] (得多 / 多了)
bǐ nǐ xiǎngxiàng de yào ...
How to Think About It
This is the regular 比 comparison with a built-in second party: the listener's imagination is the thing being compared against. The 要 is not the verb 'want' here — it is a comparative intensifier that says 'definitely more.' Drop the 要 and the sentence still works but flattens; keeping it adds the rhetorical lift of 'trust me, more than you think.' Pair with 得多 or 多了 at the end for an even stronger gap.
Examples

zhè jiā cāntīng bǐ nǐ xiǎngxiàng de yào piányi de duō.

学一门语言比你想象的要难。
xué yì mén yǔyán bǐ nǐ xiǎngxiàng de yào nán.

他做的菜比你想象的要好吃多了。
tā zuò de cài bǐ nǐ xiǎngxiàng de yào hǎo chī duō le.

Common Mistake
Learners try to put an adverb like 很 or 非常 before the adjective the way they would in a plain sentence (这本书很难). Inside a 比 comparison, those adverbs are ungrammatical — comparisons use 更, 还, 要, or end-of-sentence intensifiers like 得多 / 多了 instead.
这件事比你想象的要很复杂。
这件事比你想象的要复杂得多。
Don't Confuse With
比...更...
Standard comparison with an explicit benchmark on the left (比飞机更快). Use 比你想象的要... only when the benchmark is the listener's expectation.
没你想象的那么...
Same setup, opposite direction. Use this for 'less than you think' (没你想象的那么难). 比你想象的要... goes UP from expectation; 没你想象的那么... goes DOWN.
想不到...
Conveys surprise but is single-sided — just the speaker's reaction. 比你想象的要... explicitly drags the listener's expectation into the comparison.
