What does 最近 mean?

最近 (zuìjìn) is a time noun meaning 'recently,' 'lately,' or 'in the near future' — the period close to now, looking either back or forward.

It also keeps a literal sense of 'nearest in distance' (最近的银行 the nearest bank), though the time meaning dominates in daily speech. Two contrasts with English help learners: first, English 'recently' usually refers only to the recent past, but 最近 can mean either recent past or coming days — '最近我很忙' means 'I've been busy lately,' while '最近我要去北京' means 'I'm going to Beijing soon.'

Second, 最近 is almost always sentence-initial or pre-verbal; it does NOT take the way past-time verbs do — say '最近我学了很多' not '最近了.' For 'just now / a moment ago' use 刚才 (gāngcái), not 最近.

Note: Works in any register. As a time word it can mean recent past ('these days') or near future ('in the coming days') — context decides. Sentence-initial '最近...' is the natural opener for 'lately.'

Synonyms

近来jìnlái

近来 is slightly more written/literary and refers only to the recent past, not the near future. 最近 covers both directions and is the everyday word in conversation.

这些天zhèxiē tiān

这些天 = 'these days,' a concrete spoken expression for the recent past. 最近 is more general; 这些天 zooms in on the last several days specifically.

目前mùqián

目前 means 'at present / currently' — focuses on the current moment/state. 最近 refers to a span of time around now. '目前我在上海' (I'm currently in Shanghai) vs '最近我在上海' (I've been in Shanghai lately).

Don't confuse 最近 with

最后zuìhòu

最后 means 'last / finally / in the end' — marks the END of a sequence. 最近 means 'recently / lately.' '最近怎么样?' = how have you been lately; '最后怎么样?' = how did it turn out in the end. The most frequent HSK 3 mix-up.

刚才gāngcái

刚才 means 'just now / a moment ago' (within the last few minutes). 最近 covers a span of days, weeks, or longer. '刚才他来了' he came just now; '最近他常来' he's been coming often lately.

jìn

alone means 'near / close' in distance (我家很近 my home is near). 最近 = 'most near,' the time word. Don't say '我最近家' for 'my nearest home'; that's '离我家最近的...' (the one nearest to my home).
