直到 + Time/Condition, Subject + 才 + Verb
Reach for this when you want to mark how late something finally happened — 'it wasn't until X that Y.' 直到 names the point or condition that had to be met; 才 in the second clause stresses the lateness or difficulty. Common in storytelling, news reporting, and any context where you're emphasizing that something dragged on or that recognition came slowly. Carries a faint tone of 'finally,' sometimes regret, sometimes relief.

How to Think About It
直到 sets the wall, and 才 marks the moment the wall was breached. Up until that point, nothing happened — and the 才 in the second clause carries the speaker's judgment that 'this took too long' or 'this came only after a long wait.' The neutral version uses 到了 or 直到...就...; using 才 specifically signals the speaker's opinion that the event was delayed.

Common Mistake
Learners use 就 instead of 才 in the second clause. 就 makes the event sound prompt ('right then'); 才 makes it sound overdue ('not until then'). Both are grammatical, but they communicate opposite timing attitudes. Pair 直到 with 才 to keep the 'finally' meaning.

Don't Confuse With
直到...为止
Sets a duration that lasts up to and including a point ('keep doing X until Y'). Use 为止 when something continues; use 直到...才... when something finally happens at that point.
等到...才...
Similar 'not until' structure but with a 'wait' flavor — 等到 implies someone was waiting. 直到 is more neutral about whether there was waiting.
一直到...都...
'All the way until X, [some state continued].' Emphasizes the unbroken state up to the point. 直到...才... emphasizes the breaking of that state at the point.
