Reach for this when you want to sweep two possibilities into a single rule — 'no matter whether A or B, the same thing applies.' It's the formal way to say 'either way, it doesn't matter — Y still happens.' Common in essays, official statements, and analytical commentary: 'regardless of scale or ambition,' 'whether in city or countryside,' 'whether for adults or kids.'
Structure
wúlùn... háishi..., dōu...
How to Think About It
无论 sets the universal quantifier ('no matter what'); 还是 lists the two cases inside it; 都 then sweeps them all together with one verdict. The 都 is non-negotiable — it's the comb that gathers A and B into one outcome. Drop 都 and the sentence loses its 'all of them' force. This is the formal-register sibling of 不管...都...; both work the same way, but 无论 belongs in writing and 不管 in speech.
Examples
Wúlùn guāfēng háishi xiàyǔ, tā dōu jiānchí pǎobù.
No matter whether it's windy or raining, he keeps running.
Wúlùn nǐ tóngyì háishi fǎnduì, juédìng dōu bú huì biàn.
Whether you agree or oppose, the decision won't change.
Wúlùn cóng guīmó háishi cóng nándù láishuō, zhè dōu shì yí xiàng dà gōngchéng.
Whether in terms of scale or difficulty, this is a major project.
Common Mistake
Learners omit 都 in the result clause, by analogy with English 'whether A or B, Y is true.' Chinese requires 都 to seal the universal claim. Without 都, the sentence reads as listing options rather than sweeping over them.
Don't Confuse With
不管...都...
Same meaning, conversational register. Use 不管 in speech and casual writing; 无论 in essays and official text. The grammar is identical.
无论...都...
Single-condition version — 'no matter what X, all Y' (often with a question word: 无论谁都...). The 还是 version specifically lists TWO options; the bare version lets a question word do the sweeping.
Plain 'either A or B' in statements — doesn't say one outcome covers both. 无论A还是B,都Y insists ONE outcome applies regardless; 或者 just lists alternatives.
