并不... 而是...
Reach for this when you want to correct a misconception and put the real version in its place — 'not X, but rather Y.' The first clause emphatically denies an assumption (并不); the second clause delivers the truth (而是). This is the classic 'rhetorical pivot': you're saying 'people think it's X, but really it's Y.' Common in essays, op-eds, speeches, and analytical writing. The two clauses must share a logical contrast — same subject, parallel structure, opposite content. Slightly formal but widely used in educated speech.
Structure
(Subject) + 并不 + Verb/Adj Phrase A, 而是 + Phrase B.
bìng bù... ér shì...
How to Think About It
Picture a courtroom correction: the witness pushes back on the prosecutor's framing, then offers the real account. 并不 is the pushback; 而是 is the replacement. Where plain 不是...是... ('not X, is Y') is neutral, 并不...而是... carries argumentative weight — the speaker is pointing out that the obvious interpretation is wrong, and there's a better one. Use it when you want the listener to feel the pivot, not just hear it.
Examples
他并不笨,而是没有兴趣。
Tā bìng bù bèn, ér shì méiyǒu xìngqù.
He's not stupid; rather, he just isn't interested.
我并不反对你的想法,而是觉得时机不对。
Wǒ bìng bù fǎnduì nǐ de xiǎngfǎ, ér shì juéde shíjī bù duì.
I'm not against your idea — it's that the timing is wrong.
成功并不靠运气,而是靠努力。
Chénggōng bìng bù kào yùnqi, ér shì kào nǔlì.
Success doesn't depend on luck; it depends on hard work.
她并不冷漠,而是性格内向。
Tā bìng bù lěngmò, ér shì xìnggé nèixiàng.
She isn't cold — she's just introverted.
Common Mistake
Learners pair 并不 with 是 instead of 而是. The pair is mandatory — 并不 calls for 而是 to signal the corrective replacement. Plain 是 sounds like an awkward stitched-together sentence.
他并不懒,是太累了。
他并不懒,而是太累了。
Don't Confuse With
不是...而是...
Plain version of the same pivot. 并不...而是... adds corrective emphasis ('contrary to what you'd think'); 不是...而是... is neutral 'not X, but Y.'
并不...也不...
'Not X, and not Y either' — denies both options without offering a replacement. 而是 specifically introduces the corrected truth.
与其说...不如说...
'Rather than saying X, you might as well say Y' — softer, more rhetorical. Use 并不...而是... for sharp correction; 与其...不如... for nuanced reframing.
