一会儿……一会儿……
Reach for this when someone or something keeps switching between two states or activities in quick succession — 'one moment X, the next moment Y.' It captures the back-and-forth feeling of a restless child, a moody friend, changing weather, or a person who can't decide. The two clauses describe alternating short bursts, not a sequence of two long actions. Very common in spoken Chinese for vivid, slightly exasperated descriptions.

How to Think About It
一会儿 literally means 'a short while,' and doubling it paints the picture of two short whiles flipping back and forth. The pattern only works if the alternation feels fast and repeated — 'a moment of this, a moment of that, again and again.' If the actions are long or happen only once each, you want 先…然后… (first…then…) instead. The whole flavor is 'can't sit still / can't make up its mind.'

Common Mistake
Learners use 一会儿…一会儿… to describe a one-shot sequence ('first I ate, then I slept'), borrowing the structure from 先…然后…. That sounds wrong because 一会儿…一会儿… requires alternation or repetition — it implies the actions flip back and forth, not just two events in a row.
我一会儿吃饭，一会儿睡觉了。
我先吃饭，然后睡觉了。

先...然后...
Pure sequence — 'first X, then Y,' one-shot, no alternation. Use this for narrating steps. Use 一会儿…一会儿… only when the two actions keep flipping.
有时...有时...
'Sometimes X, sometimes Y' — describes habitual variation over a long timeframe. 一会儿…一会儿… zooms into a short window where the switching happens fast.
时而...时而...
Literary cousin with the same alternation meaning, common in writing and weather/landscape descriptions ('时而下雨，时而出太阳'). 一会儿…一会儿… is the spoken default.
