即便...也...
Reach for 即便...也... when you want to argue that even an extreme or unfavorable scenario won't change the outcome — 'even if X, still Y.' It's the formal, slightly more emphatic sibling of 即使...也.... You'll see it in news writing, essays, and confident statements where the speaker wants to brace the listener for a worst-case condition and then dismiss it. The condition can be real or hypothetical; what matters is that 也 protects the main point.
Structure
即便 [EXTREME CONDITION], 也 [UNCHANGED RESULT]
jíbiàn... yě...
How to Think About It
即便 is a fortress wall around your main claim. You let the other side imagine the worst case ('even if the price doubles,' 'even if she refuses') and then 也 holds the line: 'still, this is going to happen.' The pattern's power comes from 也 — without it, the sentence sounds like the speaker forgot to commit. 即便 reads slightly more written and assertive than 即使; pick it when you want gravity.
Examples
即便价格再贵, 我也要买这本书。
Jíbiàn jiàgé zài guì, wǒ yě yào mǎi zhè běn shū.
Even if the price is high, I still want to buy this book.
即便所有人都反对, 他也不会放弃。
Jíbiàn suǒyǒu rén dōu fǎnduì, tā yě bù huì fàngqì.
Even if everyone opposes him, he still won't give up.
即便明天下大雪, 比赛也照常进行。
Jíbiàn míngtiān xià dàxuě, bǐsài yě zhàocháng jìnxíng.
Even if it snows heavily tomorrow, the match will still go on as planned.
Common Mistake
Learners drop 也 because the English translation 'even if' doesn't seem to need a paired word. But in Chinese the second clause must contain 也 (or 还、都) to complete the concessive structure. Without it, the sentence sounds unfinished and the 'still' meaning evaporates.
即便下大雨, 我们去爬山。
即便下大雨, 我们也去爬山。
Don't Confuse With
即使...也...
Nearly identical in meaning. 即使 is more common in speech; 即便 is more written and slightly more formal. In essays and news, 即便 fits better; in everyday speech, 即使 sounds more natural.
尽管...但...
尽管 concedes a real, current fact; 即便 considers a hypothetical or extreme case. 'Even though it's raining' (it is) = 尽管. 'Even if it rains' (it might) = 即便.
就算...也...
就算 is the spoken, casual version of 即便. Same meaning, much more conversational. Don't use 就算 in formal writing; don't use 即便 if you're trying to sound relaxed.
