How to Think About It

Common Mistake
Learners forget the 就 and write '凭借两家公司，把自己抬到了第八。' Grammatical, but the punch is gone — it now reads as a flat report instead of a 'they did it with just THIS' boast. Always include 就 to keep the disproportion vivid.

Don't Confuse With
靠...
靠 is the colloquial 'rely on' ('靠他帮忙'). 凭借 is the formal / written equivalent. Pick by register — 靠 in speech, 凭借 in writing or formal speech.
只要...就...
只要...就 = 'as long as X, then Y' — a conditional. 凭借...就 names the actual means already deployed; it's not hypothetical.
依靠...
依靠 stresses long-term dependence ('依靠父母'). 凭借 stresses one-off leverage of a particular asset or skill.
