处于……
Reach for this when you want to describe what STATE, POSITION, or PHASE someone or something is currently in — and you want it to sound serious. 'The market is in a downturn,' 'The country is in a crisis,' 'NBA is in the middle of a controversy.' It's the formal equivalent of 在 ('to be in/at') reserved for abstract conditions rather than physical places. Common in news, analysis, official statements, and any writing where a casual 在 would sound too light.

How to Think About It
处 = 'be situated,' 于 = 'in/at' (literary). Together 处于 is the formal 'to be located in [an abstract condition].' Use it for situations, not addresses — 我处于办公室 sounds bizarre; 公司处于困难时期 sounds right. The object after 处于 is almost always a noun phrase describing a state: a phase, a position, a moment, a crisis. Verbs don't fit there.

Common Mistake
Learners use 处于 for physical locations because 在 also means 'to be at.' 处于 only works for abstract states; saying you 处于 your living room sounds like translated English.

Don't Confuse With
在...中
Less formal way to express 'in the middle of [a situation].' Pick 在...中 in speech, 处于 in news and essays.
处在...
Very close in meaning. 处在 leans slightly toward physical/concrete positioning; 处于 leans abstract. Most contexts allow either.
正在 + Verb
Progressive action ('is doing X right now'). 处于 describes a state, not an ongoing action.
