一边...一边...
Reach for this when you want to say someone is doing two things at the same time — 'doing A while doing B.' Slot a verb after each 一边. Both actions are ongoing and concurrent: 一边吃饭一边看电视. The subject stays the same for both. Conversational and everyday — used constantly to describe multitasking, habits, observations.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 一边 [VERB A] 一边 [VERB B]
yìbiān... yìbiān...
How to Think About It
一边 literally means 'one side' — picture the subject splitting attention between two sides. Both halves need to be active verbs happening simultaneously; stative descriptions (being tall, being tired) don't fit. The single subject performs both actions in parallel. Switching to a second subject mid-sentence breaks the pattern — use 一边 only when the same person is doing both.
Examples
他一边吃早饭一边看新闻。
Tā yìbiān chī zǎofàn yìbiān kàn xīnwén.
He eats breakfast while watching the news.
孩子们一边唱歌一边跳舞。
Háizimen yìbiān chànggē yìbiān tiàowǔ.
The kids are singing and dancing at the same time.
我喜欢一边听音乐一边写作业。
Wǒ xǐhuan yìbiān tīng yīnyuè yìbiān xiě zuòyè.
I like to do homework while listening to music.
他一边吃饭,一边看电视。
Tā yībiān chīfàn, yībiān kàn diànshì.
He eats while watching TV.
我一边走路,一边听音乐。
Wǒ yībiān zǒulù, yībiān tīng yīnyuè.
I walk while listening to music.
她一边工作,一边照顾孩子。
Tā yībiān gōngzuò, yībiān zhàogù háizi.
She works while taking care of her kids.
Common Mistake
Learners use 一边...一边... for sequential actions, treating it as 'first A, then B.' The pattern strictly requires the actions to overlap in time, not happen back to back.
我一边洗澡一边睡觉。
我先洗澡,然后睡觉。
Don't Confuse With
一面...一面...
Same meaning, slightly more literary. Use 一面 in writing or formal speech; 一边 in everyday conversation.
同时
同时 ('at the same time') is a standalone adverb. 一边...一边... is the dedicated dual-action frame. Use 同时 to add one extra action; 一边...一边... to set up the structure from the start.
又...又...
又...又... describes two qualities or features (又便宜又好). 一边...一边... describes two actions happening at once. Different jobs.
在 [VERB]ing (progressive)
Marks one action in progress; doesn't pair two. Use 在 + verb for 'he's eating right now'; use 一边...一边... when two actions are happening at once.
同时
'At the same time' — more formal/abstract. Used to link two clauses or facts ('同时,我们也要注意...'). Use 一边...一边... for physical, concurrent actions of one person; use 同时 for parallel situations or arguments.
