...以至于...
Reach for this when an extreme quality in the first clause spills over and forces a specific consequence in the second — 'so X that Y.' The first clause sets up a degree that's pushed past a tipping point (too popular, too tired, too cold); 以至于 then drops in the result that this degree caused. It's a step more formal than the everyday 太...了 sentence and shows up in op-eds, reviews, and any commentary that wants to sound considered.
Structure
[CAUSE/DEGREE], 以至于 [RESULT]
... yǐzhìyú ...
How to Think About It
以至于 is the hinge that turns an intensity into a consequence. The first half MUST contain something extreme — 太, 这么, 那么, 如此 — because 以至于 needs a tipping point to pivot off. Plain 'I was tired, so I slept' won't take 以至于; 'I was so tired that I slept through the alarm' will. If you can't say 'so... that...' in English, the Chinese sentence doesn't need 以至于 either.
Examples
他笑得太厉害了, 以至于说不出话来。
Tā xiào de tài lìhai le, yǐzhìyú shuō bu chū huà lái.
He laughed so hard that he couldn't get a word out.
这本书太有意思了, 以至于我一晚上就看完了。
Zhè běn shū tài yǒu yìsi le, yǐzhìyú wǒ yì wǎnshang jiù kàn wán le.
This book was so interesting that I finished it in one night.
他跑得那么快, 以至于没人追得上。
Tā pǎo de nàme kuài, yǐzhìyú méi rén zhuī de shàng.
He ran so fast that no one could catch up.
Common Mistake
Learners use 以至于 as a plain 'so' or 'therefore' the way they'd use 所以, but 以至于 demands an extreme cause and an unintended or striking result. Putting it after a neutral statement sounds odd, like saying 'It was raining, to such an extent that I took an umbrella.'
下雨了, 以至于我带了伞。
雨下得太大了, 以至于我全身都湿了。
Don't Confuse With
所以
Plain cause-and-effect. Use 所以 for any reason→result link. Switch to 以至于 only when the cause is extreme and the result feels like an overflow.
甚至
Means 'even' — adds a surprising item to a list, doesn't link cause to result. '他甚至忘了自己的名字' = 'He even forgot his own name.' 以至于 needs a full result clause.
导致
A verb meaning 'lead to / cause,' usually for negative outcomes in news writing. 导致 takes a noun phrase; 以至于 takes a full clause.
