Reach for this written, slightly literary phrase when you want to crown a single example as THE best, worst, or most striking instance of some quality — 'nothing is more X than Y.' The slot before 莫过于 names the quality (most thrilling, most regrettable, most impressive), and the slot after 莫过于 names the supreme example. Common in reviews, editorials, and rhetorical writing. Speech tends to use 最…的是…… instead.

How to Think About It
莫 = 'none,' 过 = 'surpass,' 于 = 'than.' Stitched together: 'none surpasses…' So 最让人感动的莫过于X reads literally as 'the most moving — none surpasses X.' Because the phrase already carries the superlative force, you do NOT need another 最 inside the same clause. The example after 莫过于 has to be ONE specific thing or person, not a list.

Common Mistake
Learners double the superlative by writing 最…莫过于…最…. The 最 at the start is enough; 莫过于 itself already means 'none surpasses,' so anything after it must be a single concrete example, not a second superlative.

Don't Confuse With
最...的是...
Conversational version: 最好看的电影是X. 莫过于 is the bookish, more emphatic equivalent.
莫如 / 不如...
不如 ranks two options and recommends the second ('A 不如 B'). 莫过于 crowns a single top example, not a comparison between two.
首屈一指
Idiom meaning 'unrivaled, top of the list,' used as a predicate. 莫过于 is a frame inside a sentence that lets you name the unrivaled example explicitly.
最 + Adjective + 的是...
The neutral, conversational way to single out a superlative. Use this in speech and everyday writing. 莫过于 is the formal, essay-register version of the same idea.
再... 也不过...
'No matter how X, still not more than Y' — a different formal pattern for comparing extremes. 莫过于 names the top of a category; 再...也不过 sets an upper bound.
