Reach for 以一己之力 when one person, against all odds, single-handedly carried a result — usually a heroic, surprising, or impressive one. 'Single-handedly led the team to the championship.' 'Single-handedly turned the project around.' This is a literary set phrase, common in news headlines, sports commentary, and praise speeches. It frames the achievement as remarkable precisely because there was just one person doing it.

Common Mistake

独自
独自 means 'alone' in a neutral sense — '独自吃饭' (eat alone). 以一己之力 adds the heroic dimension: alone AND it was a big deal.

Plain spoken Chinese for 'by oneself' — '一个人去旅行' (travel alone). Use 一个人 in everyday speech; 以一己之力 belongs in headlines and formal praise.
凭一己之力
Very close synonym, slightly more emphasis on 'relying on oneself.' 凭 stresses the agent's effort; 以 stresses the means. In practice, almost interchangeable.
