恰恰 (qiàqià) — precisely; exactly
Reach for this when reality lands precisely opposite to what someone expected — 'precisely,' 'exactly,' 'on the contrary.' 恰恰 doesn't just say 'exactly the same' (that's 正好); it flags the match as ironic, paradoxical, or counterintuitive. The speaker is pointing out that the expected outcome and the real outcome have collided in a striking way. Common in essays, editorials, debate, and educated speech where you want to underline a twist. Slightly literary register — avoid in totally casual chat.
Structure
(Subject) + 恰恰 + Verb/Adjective/相反.
qià qià
How to Think About It
Picture two arrows aimed at the same target but pointing the opposite way — 恰恰 says 'exactly that one.' It often pairs with 相反 ('on the contrary') or with a verb that overturns an assumption: 恰恰相反 ('quite the opposite'), 恰恰说明 ('it precisely shows'), 恰恰是 ('it's precisely'). Use it when you want the reader to feel a small click of 'oh — the OPPOSITE of what I thought.'

Common Mistake
Learners swap 恰恰 with 正好 because both translate as 'exactly.' 正好 is neutral coincidence ('I happened to be there'); 恰恰 carries pointed contrast or paradox. Using 恰恰 for a plain coincidence sounds overblown.
我恰恰路过那里。
我正好路过那里。
Don't Confuse With
正好
Neutral 'just right / by coincidence.' Use for everyday lucky timing. 恰恰 adds rhetorical weight and ironic flavor.
刚好
Spoken cousin of 正好 — 'just right.' Casual, no contrast implied. 恰恰 belongs in writing or pointed argument.
偏偏
'Of all things' — flags unwelcome coincidence ('it had to rain TODAY'). 恰恰 highlights logical paradox; 偏偏 highlights bad luck or contrariness.
