如果……(的话),(就)……
Reach for 如果...(的话),(就)... whenever you want to state a hypothetical — 'if X, then Y.' The most common Chinese conditional, neutral in register and used everywhere from casual chats to news. 的话 at the end of the first clause is optional and softens the tone, common in spoken Chinese. 就 in the second clause is also optional but recommended — it tightens the cause-effect link. Use this for plans, advice, warnings, and any 'what would happen if' situation.
Structure
如果 + Clause 1 + (的话), (Subject) + (就) + Clause 2
rú guǒ... (de huà), (jiù)...
How to Think About It
Think of 如果 as the opener, 的话 as a soft closer for the condition ('if it's the case that...'), and 就 as the bridge to the consequence. All three can appear together (如果...的话, 就...), or you can drop the optional ones: 如果 + clause + clause works fine. The more pieces you keep, the more polished the structure feels. 的话 alone (without 如果) is also possible in casual speech: 下雨的话,我就不去 = 'if it rains, I won't go.'
Examples
如果你有时间,就来我家吃饭吧。
Rú guǒ nǐ yǒu shí jiān, jiù lái wǒ jiā chī fàn ba.
If you have time, come over for dinner.
如果明天下雨的话,我们就不去公园了。
Rú guǒ míng tiān xià yǔ de huà, wǒ men jiù bú qù gōng yuán le.
If it rains tomorrow, we won't go to the park.
如果你不舒服,就早点回家休息。
Rú guǒ nǐ bù shū fu, jiù zǎo diǎn huí jiā xiū xi.
If you're not feeling well, head home early and rest.
如果我是你,我就接受这个工作。
Rú guǒ wǒ shì nǐ, wǒ jiù jiē shòu zhè ge gōng zuò.
If I were you, I'd take this job.
Common Mistake
Learners insert 会 in the second clause where English uses 'would.' Chinese conditionals don't require 会 — 就 + verb is enough. Reserve 会 for when you really mean likelihood ('would probably').
如果明天下雨,我会不会去。
如果明天下雨,我就不去。
Don't Confuse With
要是... 就...
要是 is the conversational twin of 如果. Same meaning, more casual. Both work in speech; 如果 is preferred in writing.
假如... 就...
假如 sets up a hypothetical that's more imaginative or unlikely ('suppose,' 'imagine if'). 如果 is neutral and covers everyday possibilities. Use 假如 when the scenario is clearly counterfactual.
一旦... 就...
一旦 means 'once X happens' with a sense of inevitability. 如果 just proposes a possibility; 一旦 implies the speaker thinks the trigger is realistic and the consequence is locked in.
