只有...
Reach for this when you want to mark something as the sole option, sole condition, or sole person — 'only X.' 只有 narrows the scope: only this much, only him, only when this happens. Often paired with 才 in the second clause to say 'only if X, then Y.' Neutral register — works across speech, writing, news, and instructions. Common contexts: stating restrictions ('only members'), exclusive conditions ('only by working hard'), and limited quantities ('only three left').
Structure
只有 + Noun/Clause + (Subject + 才 + V)
zhǐ yǒu...
How to Think About It
只有 narrows; 才 closes the loop. When 只有 introduces a condition, the consequence almost always uses 才 ('only then will...'). Without 才, you lose the 'exclusive condition' feel. 只有 also works alone as 'only / there's only' for quantities: 只有三个 ('there are only three'). The two uses share the same word but different shapes — quantity stands alone, condition pairs with 才.
Examples
教室里只有一个学生。
Jiàoshì lǐ zhǐ yǒu yīgè xuéshēng.
There's only one student in the classroom.
只有多练习,才能说得流利。
Zhǐ yǒu duō liànxí, cái néng shuō de liúlì.
Only by practicing more can you speak fluently.

Wǒ zhǐ yǒu shí kuài qián.
I only have ten yuan.
只有他知道密码。
Zhǐ yǒu tā zhīdào mìmǎ.
Only he knows the password.
Common Mistake
Learners use 就 instead of 才 in the result clause. 就 sounds prompt and easy; 才 sounds restrictive and 'only then.' 只有 needs 才 to convey 'this is the only way': 只有努力,才能成功 — not 只有努力,就能成功.
只有努力,就能成功。
只有努力,才能成功。
Don't Confuse With
只要...就...
'As long as X, then Y' — X is a SUFFICIENT condition (one of possibly several ways). 只有...才... makes X a NECESSARY condition (the only way). Big logical difference.
只是
'Just / merely' — softens a statement ('I'm just asking'). 只有 says there's only X and nothing else; 只是 says it's merely X and not something bigger.
唯一
'The only one (as an adjective)' — modifies a noun ('my only friend' = 我唯一的朋友). 只有 is a connective/restrictor that applies to clauses or quantities.
