如果...会...
Reach for this when you want to lay out a condition and predict what would happen — 'if X, then [I/it] will Y.' 如果 sets up the if-clause, 会 in the second half marks the prediction. It is the most basic Chinese conditional, used for promises, warnings, predictions, and hypotheticals. Think of how often you say 'if it rains I'll bring an umbrella' or 'if you ask, I'll help' — this is the same move in Chinese.
Structure
如果 [CONDITION] [SUBJECT] 会 [RESULT]
rúguǒ... huì...
How to Think About It
Both halves carry weight. 如果 sets the trigger; 会 carries the prediction — it is the auxiliary that says 'this is what will happen, not what is happening now.' Dropping 会 turns the second half into a present-tense fact and the whole sentence stops feeling hypothetical. Keep both for any 'if [hypothetical], will [outcome]' sentence.
Examples
如果你来, 我会很高兴。
Rúguǒ nǐ lái, wǒ huì hěn gāoxìng.
If you come, I'll be very happy.
如果明天下雨, 我们会取消比赛。
Rúguǒ míngtiān xià yǔ, wǒmen huì qǔxiāo bǐsài.
If it rains tomorrow, we'll cancel the game.
如果同学有困难, 我会帮他。
Rúguǒ tóngxué yǒu kùnnan, wǒ huì bāng tā.
If a classmate has trouble, I'll help him.
Common Mistake
Learners drop 会 because English 'if you ask, I help' technically works without 'will.' In Chinese, without 会 the second half sounds like a statement of habit, not a prediction tied to the condition.
如果你问我, 我帮你。
如果你问我, 我会帮你。
Don't Confuse With
如果...就...
Same setup, but 就 emphasizes immediate consequence ('then right away') rather than future prediction. Use 就 for cause-and-effect; use 会 when you are predicting what will happen.
要是...就...
Same meaning as 如果...就..., but more colloquial and spoken. 要是 sounds like everyday speech; 如果 works in both speech and writing.
的话
Optional softener that goes at the END of the if-clause: 如果你问我的话, 我会帮你. It does not replace 如果 — it just makes the condition feel more tentative.
