Common in essays, news analysis, and reflective writing where you're isolating the real reason behind something. Slightly formal — in casual speech 就是 covers a lot of the same ground.

How to Think About It
正 means 'right / precisely'; 是 means 'is.' Together: 'it is precisely.' Think of 正是 as a verbal spotlight — you're pinning down the exact element that matters. It often pairs with 才 in the second clause to make a causal claim: 正是因为 X，才 Y ('it is precisely because of X that Y'). The pattern feels like an essayist's tool — pointing at the load-bearing piece of the argument.

Common Mistake
Learners drop 正是 into casual speech where 就是 fits better, or omit the 才 partner in causal sentences, weakening the rhetorical force.

Don't Confuse With
就是
Casual everyday 'is exactly / is just.' Less rhetorical weight. Use 就是 in speech; switch to 正是 in formal writing for sharper identification.
正好
'Just right / by chance.' Coincidence focus. 我正好路过 ('I happened to be passing by'). 正是 is identifying; 正好 is coincidental.
恰恰
'Precisely / exactly / on the contrary.' Often used to emphasize a counter-expected truth. 恰恰相反 ('on the contrary'). 正是 spotlights the cause; 恰恰 highlights surprise.
