只能 + Verb Phrase
Reach for 只能 when there's exactly one option left — 'can only / have no choice but to.' It's not 'I want to,' it's 'this is the only door still open.' Use it for forced choices in everyday situations: the store is closed, so you 只能 go somewhere else; the flight is canceled, so you 只能 take the train. The tone carries mild resignation, which fits how often it shows up in news and complaints.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 只能 [VERB PHRASE]

How to Think About It
Think of 只能 as 'the only possible' instead of 'only can.' 只 narrows the set down to one, and 能 keeps that one option open. If there were two options, you'd use 可以 or list them with 或者. 只能 specifically says the world has closed every other door — so it almost always implies that the speaker would have picked differently if they could.
Examples
下雨了,我们只能坐出租车。
Xià yǔ le, wǒmen zhǐ néng zuò chūzū chē.
It's raining; we can only take a taxi.
店关了,你只能明天再来。
Diàn guān le, nǐ zhǐ néng míngtiān zài lái.
The store's closed — you'll have to come back tomorrow.
没有公交车,我只能走路回家。
Méiyǒu gōngjiāo chē, wǒ zhǐ néng zǒulù huí jiā.
There's no bus, so I can only walk home.
Common Mistake
Learners use 只能 when they mean 'I only want to' or 'I prefer to.' But 只能 is about external constraint, not preference. For preference use 只想 (only want to).
我只能吃中国菜,我很喜欢。
我只喜欢吃中国菜。
Don't Confuse With
只 + Verb
只 alone restricts the verb but doesn't carry 'forced to' meaning. 只能 specifically says no other option exists.
不得不 + Verb
不得不 also means 'have to,' but stronger — it stresses obligation. 只能 emphasizes the lack of alternatives rather than the duty.
只好 + Verb
只好 is close to 只能, but feels even more resigned — 'so I had no choice but to.' 只能 is more neutral about the constraint.
