X 在 ... 的时候 + Verb
Use this to anchor an action to a specific moment in time. It is the everyday way to say 'when X is doing Y, Z happens' — a time-clause frame that sits at the front of the sentence and tells the listener WHEN the main verb takes place. 的时候 literally means 'the time of,' turning the whole inner clause into a temporal noun phrase.

How to Think About It
Think of 在...的时候 as a frame around an event that converts the whole thing into a 'when'-block. The 在 is optional in casual speech (开车的时候 alone is fine), but adding 在 makes the time clause crisper and slightly more formal. The 的时候 part is what does the real grammatical work — it lets you stack any verb phrase inside and turn it into a time reference. Critically, the main clause can describe ongoing action (看到), simultaneous habit, or a one-time event — the frame just sets WHEN.

Common Mistake
Learners forget the 的 and write 时候 alone, producing '开车时候看到了' — which sounds off. 时候 by itself is a noun meaning 'time,' but to attach it to a verb phrase you need the connecting 的. The 的 is what binds the inner clause to 时候.

...以后
After X, not during X. 吃饭的时候 = while eating; 吃完饭以后 = after eating.
一...就...
Use when one event triggers another immediately. 在...的时候 marks overlap; 一...就... marks instant sequence.
