X 是 Y 的天作之合
Reach for this when two things fit each other so perfectly they feel destined — 'X and Y are a match made in heaven.' 天作之合 is a four-character idiom (chengyu) that originally described soulmate marriages and now gets used in business writing, marketing, and casual conversation for any pairing that clicks: a product and its platform, an actor and a role, a flavor and a season. It's strong rhetorical fuel — use it sparingly so it keeps its punch.
Structure
[X] 是 [Y] 的天作之合 / [X] 和 [Y] 是天作之合
... shì ... de tiānzuòzhīhé
How to Think About It
天作之合 literally means 'made by heaven, joined together.' The structure works two ways: 'X 是 Y 的天作之合' (X is Y's match made in heaven — possessive frame, slightly more written) or 'X 和 Y 是天作之合' (X and Y are a match — symmetric frame, more spoken). The chengyu does all the emotional lifting; the rest of the sentence is plumbing. Reach for this when 很合适 (a good fit) doesn't carry enough weight.

Common Mistake
Learners often mistake 天作之合 for a generic 'good combination' and use it for trivial pairings (coffee and milk, my dog and my couch). It's reserved for pairings that feel uncannily perfect — a viral product and the platform that made it viral, two careers that complete each other. Using it on banal pairings sounds melodramatic.
牛奶和咖啡是天作之合。
牛奶和咖啡是绝配。
Don't Confuse With
X 和 Y 是绝配
'X and Y are a perfect match.' Lower register, lighter weight — fine for everyday pairings like food, colors, or playlist combos. Use 绝配 when 天作之合 would sound overblown.
X 和 Y 很合适
'X and Y fit well.' Plain and practical. Use this when you mean 'they work together,' not 'they were made for each other.'
门当户对
Another chengyu about matching, but specifically about social/economic compatibility for marriage. 天作之合 is about cosmic fit; 门当户对 is about matching backgrounds.
