X 是 Y, 而是 Z
Reach for this when you're correcting a misread with deliberate force — 'X isn't Y, it's actually Z.' This is the emphatic, written-register cousin of plain 不是...而是.... You'll see it in op-eds, analysis, and persuasive writing whenever the author wants to say 'the obvious read is wrong; here's what's really going on.' The 是 in the first slot is typically negated (不是 / 并非 / 并不是) — the structure exists to KILL a wrong framing before delivering the right one.
Structure
[X] 不是/并非 [WRONG IDEA], 而是 [CORRECT IDEA]
... bú shì ..., érshì ...
How to Think About It
而是 is a hinge that pivots from a rejected claim to the real one. The two halves have to be the same TYPE of thing — two nouns, two reasons, two verb phrases — because the second slot replaces the first in the same grammatical slot. If the second half answers a different question than the first, the sentence collapses. Think of it as 'cross out, then write in.'
Examples
真正的问题不是价格, 而是质量。
Zhēnzhèng de wèntí bú shì jiàgé, érshì zhìliàng.
The real problem isn't the price; it's the quality.
他离开不是因为生气, 而是因为累了。
Tā líkāi bú shì yīnwèi shēngqì, érshì yīnwèi lèi le.
He didn't leave because he was angry; he left because he was tired.
最让我担心的不是结果, 而是过程。
Zuì ràng wǒ dānxīn de bú shì jiéguǒ, érshì guòchéng.
What worries me most isn't the result; it's the process.
Common Mistake
Learners use 但是 ('but') where 而是 belongs, because English 'but' covers both contrast and correction. 但是 sets up contrast — both halves are true. 而是 cancels the first half and replaces it with the second. If you're saying 'it's actually Z,' you need 而是.

Don't Confuse With
不是...就是...
Looks alike but does the opposite — 'either X or Y,' both options possible. 不是中文就是英文 = 'either Chinese or English.' Compare with 不是...而是... which CORRECTS rather than offers a choice.
不仅...而且...
Additive: the first clause is true and the second adds to it. With 不是...而是... the first clause is false. Don't mix them up — they go in opposite directions.
并非...而是...
Same structure, even more formal. 并非 belongs in headlines, essays, official statements. Use 不是...而是... in everyday speech, 并非...而是... when you want gravitas.
