X 也 + Verb
Reach for 也 when you want to add a person, a thing, or an action to something already on the table — 'me too,' 'her too,' 'I do that too.' 也 sits BEFORE the verb (or before 是, 很, 有), and tells the listener that whatever was just said about somebody else also applies here. It is one of the first connector words you learn and shows up in every conversation: 我也是, 我也喜欢, 我也去.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 也 [VERB / 是 / 很 / 有]
yě + [verb]
How to Think About It
也 attaches to the verb, not the noun — so 'I also like coffee' is 我也喜欢咖啡, not 也我喜欢咖啡. The 也 is doing the work English does with 'too' at the end of the sentence, but Chinese front-loads it right before the action. If you can't say it out loud directly before the verb, you've placed it wrong.

Common Mistake
English speakers stick 也 at the very start of the sentence, copying 'Me too' word for word. In Chinese, 也 must hug the verb, after the subject. 也我去 sounds broken; 我也去 is correct.
也我喜欢中国菜。
我也喜欢中国菜。
Don't Confuse With
还
还 means 'also' in the sense of 'in addition' — adding a second thing the SAME subject does. 也 adds a new subject doing the same thing. '我喜欢咖啡, 也喜欢茶' (I like coffee AND tea) uses 也 loosely, but 还 is sharper for stacking actions: '我喝了咖啡, 还吃了一个面包.'
都
都 means 'all/both' — every member of a group does X. 也 means 'this one too.' '我们都去' = we all go; '我也去' = I go too (in addition to whoever else was mentioned).
也是
Fixed combo when the predicate is identity: 'I'm also a student' = 我也是学生 (not 我也学生). 也 still sits before 是 — same rule, just remember to keep 是.
还
还 means 'in addition' and adds MORE items to the same subject (我喜欢茶,还喜欢咖啡). 也 adds a PARALLEL subject doing the same thing (他喜欢茶,我也喜欢).
都
都 means 'all/both,' grouping multiple subjects under one predicate (我们都去). 也 chains two separate statements; 都 collapses them into one.
