Use this when you've just described a situation or fact, and you want to point out that this same situation explains something else the listener already knows or you're about to mention. Sits at the start of an explanatory sentence after a comma or period. The 也 ('also') is doing crucial work — it signals that the current cause adds to or aligns with another reason the listener understands. Common in analysis, op-eds, and reasoned argument.

How to Think About It
这 points back to the previous sentence; 也 says 'this adds to what you already know'; 是为什么 introduces what it explains. Together they create a 'so that's why' moment — the speaker is connecting a known outcome to its real cause. Drop 也 and the sentence still works but loses the layered feel of 'and this too is part of the reason.'

Common Mistake
Learners drop 这 and start with 也是为什么, but the 这 is what anchors the phrase to the previous sentence. Without 这, the listener doesn't know WHAT is being identified as the reason. The pronoun is mandatory.

Don't Confuse With
所以...
'Therefore' — pushes forward to a conclusion. 这也是为什么 pulls backward, identifying the previous fact AS the explanation for something.
原因是...
'The reason is...' — flatly states a cause. 这也是为什么 frames the explanation as a satisfying realization, often connecting two threads.
正因为如此...
'It's precisely because of this that...' — more emphatic, more formal. 这也是为什么 is conversational and often follows a soft observation rather than a strong claim.
