Chengdu Travel Guide: Pandas, Teahouses, Sichuan Food

Updated

The panda base in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, opens at 7:30 most of the year. By noon most of the pandas are asleep, so go early and save the afternoon for a teahouse.

There is a short audio story about Chengdu in Mandarin, with English alongside. No Chinese needed for the beginner version. Jump to the story

A short history of Chengdu

Chengdu has kept its name and its place for about 2,300 years, which is rare in China. In the Three Kingdoms period (220–280), when the empire split into three rival states, it was the capital of one of them, Shu. An irrigation system built at Dujiangyan in 256 BC still waters the plain around it. The plain’s plenty is why the city could afford to relax.

Sichuan pepper has been grown here for two thousand years. It is the má, the numbing half of málà, "numbing and hot", the flavour of the local food. Chilli, the là, reached China from the Americas in the late 1500s and was first grown for its looks. Sichuan cooks took it up about a century later.

The Chengdu Panda Base

成都大熊猫繁育研究基地 Chéngdū Dàxióngmāo Fányù Yánjiū Jīdì

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding opened in 1987 with six pandas rescued from the wild. It is now one of the biggest places in the world to see them: a park of bamboo groves and enclosures about 10 km north of the centre, with more than 200 pandas and, from late summer, that year’s cubs in the nursery.

Pandas eat for up to fourteen hours a day, sleep most of the rest, and do their eating in the morning. Arrive at opening and you get animals moving about and stripping bamboo. Arrive at noon in summer and you get fur asleep in a tree. Panda Valley at Dujiangyan, about an hour and a half away by car, is the quieter alternative.

How to visit the Chengdu Panda Base

  1. 1

    Book a named ticket

Book on the base’s WeChat mini-program (in Chinese) or on Trip.com, with your passport number, up to 14 days ahead. Book a few days ahead in summer and on holidays, and bring the passport itself.

  2. 2

    Be there when it opens

Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue, then bus 408 or a short taxi to the south gate. Gates open at 7:30 from March to October and at 8 in winter. The pandas are fed early and are awake for the first two or three hours.

  3. 3

    Do the loop on foot

The base is big and hilly. There are shuttle buses, but walking the loop takes about three hours and passes every enclosure. Start with the adults and end at the nursery.

  4. 4

    Don’t pay to hold one

Nobody holds pandas here any more; anyone selling that is selling something else. Bring water and go slowly.

Cubs are born from July to September and appear in the nursery from about October. Red pandas live here too and are usually awake.

Things to do in Chengdu beyond the pandas

The teahouses, the Kuanzhai Alleys and Jinli are in the centre. Leshan is a day.

Heming, a teahouse open since 1923, sits here under the trees by a pond. Order a jasmine tea, sit as long as you like, and let the ear-cleaner with his tuning fork find you. Around the pond, retirees dance, sing and play mahjong. A short walk north, the Kuanzhai Alleys are three lanes of old courtyard houses from the Qing, China’s last dynasty, reopened in 2008 as teahouses, snack shops and bars.

The shrine honours Zhuge Liang, chief minister and strategist of Shu in the Three Kingdoms, and is a quiet old set of halls and gardens. Next door, Jinli is a rebuilt old street of snack stalls, shadow puppets and lanterns. Do the shrine by day and Jinli after dark, for the lanterns and a skewer of everything.

A 71-metre seated Buddha carved into a river cliff between 713 and 803, the tallest stone Buddha in the world. About an hour from Chengdu East or South by fast train, then half an hour by bus or taxi to the site. Walk down the stairs beside it to stand at its feet, or take the boat for the view from the river. A full day.

Hotpot 火锅

A pot of chilli-and-pepper broth boiling in the middle of the table, in which you cook meat, offal and vegetables yourself. Ask for a yuanyang pot (鸳鸯锅), half spicy and half clear, and for 微辣 (wēilà), mild, the first time. It will not be mild.

Mapo tofu 麻婆豆腐

mápó dòufu

Soft tofu in a sauce of fermented beans, chilli and ground Sichuan pepper, hot and numbing at once. The dish that explains málà in one bowl.

Dan dan noodles 担担面

dàndàn miàn

A small bowl of noodles with minced pork, preserved vegetable, chilli oil and sesame paste. Named after the pole the sellers once carried them on.

Best time to visit Chengdu

Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) are mild. Summer is hot and muggy, about 31°C by day in July, with most of the year’s rain. Winter is mild but grey; Chengdu gets only about 1,000 hours of sun a year.

Avoid Golden Week, 1 to 7 October, and Chinese New Year, when the queues at the panda base and Leshan are longest.

Getting to Chengdu

Most international flights land at Tianfu, about 50 km southeast. Metro Line 18 reaches Chengdu South station in 35 to 50 minutes; allow an hour or more to the centre. Shuangliu, about 16 km southwest, handles mostly domestic flights, and Line 10 reaches Wuhou Shrine in about half an hour.

Most fast trains use Chengdu East. The quickest take about three hours from Xi’an North and just over an hour from Chongqing.

Getting around Chengdu

The metro is cheap, signed in English and often faster than a car at rush hour. Didi, the ride-hailing app, has an English interface and takes foreign cards.

Pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay, both of which link foreign cards; keep a little cash for street stalls. Menus in small noodle shops usually have no English, so point at what the next table is eating.

Where to stay in Chengdu

Around Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li, the shopping heart of town, you are on Lines 2 and 3 and can walk to dinner anywhere. Near People’s Park and the Kuanzhai Alleys is calmer, with teahouses on the doorstep.

Flying from Shuangliu? The Wuhou Shrine area is on Line 10, straight to the airport.

Chengdu in three days

  1. Day 1. The panda base at opening, back by lunch. Tea in People’s Park, then the Kuanzhai Alleys at dusk.
  2. Day 2. Wuhou Shrine in the morning, Jinli after dark, and hotpot for dinner.
  3. Day 3. An early fast train to Leshan, down the stairs to the Buddha’s feet before the midday queue, and back for dinner.

Questions about visiting Chengdu

What time should you go to the panda base?

At opening: 7:30 from March to October, 8 in winter. Pandas eat in the morning and sleep from late morning, especially in summer.

Is Chengdu food too spicy for visitors?

It can be, but you can ask. 微辣 (wēilà) is mild, 不辣 (bù là) is not spicy, and every hotpot place does a half-and-half pot with a clear side. The numbing from Sichuan pepper surprises people more than the heat.

Can you see the Leshan Buddha in a day from Chengdu?

Yes. Fast trains take about an hour to Leshan, then a bus or taxi to the site. Leave early; the stairs down the cliff have a queue by midday.

Chengdu panda base or Panda Valley at Dujiangyan?

The Chengdu base is 10 km from the centre and has the nursery. Panda Valley is quieter but about an hour and a half away by car, so it takes most of a day.

Can you fly from Chengdu to Lhasa?

Yes, several times a day, in about two to two and a half hours. You need a Tibet permit, arranged by an agency with your tour, before you can board.
