不仅...也...
Reach for this when one thing is true and a second, related thing is ALSO true — and you want to emphasize that the situation extends beyond the first item. 'Not only X, but Y too.' Slightly more formal than 不只是...也...; common in news, essays, business writing, and thoughtful speech. The two clauses are usually parallel in shape, and the second one often broadens the scope from the first.

How to Think About It
不仅 sets up the first claim with an 'and there's more' flag baked in. 也 in the second clause is structurally required — it's the 'too' that closes the pair. Both clauses should share a logical subject or theme. If the second clause is a stronger, escalated case rather than a parallel one, switch to 不仅...而且...; if it's just a casual add-on, drop down to 不只是...也....

Common Mistake
Learners drop 也 in the second clause, assuming 不仅 alone is enough. In Chinese the pair is fixed — 也 (or 还/而且) is what completes the construction. Without it the sentence sounds unfinished.
他不仅会说英语，会说中文。
他不仅会说英语，也会说中文。
Don't Confuse With
不仅...而且...
Use 而且 when the second item is stronger or escalates the first ('not only X, but EVEN Y'). 也 stays parallel; 而且 climbs higher.
不只是...也...
Same idea, more conversational. Drop 不仅 to 不只是 when you're chatting.
除了...也/还...
'Besides X, also Y.' Adds rather than emphasizes. 不仅 puts more weight on 'beyond just A.'
