自从...之后
Reach for 自从...之后 when you want to pin a change in habit, state, or trend to a specific past starting point — 'ever since X.' It frames a turning point and tells the listener 'from that moment on, things have been different.' Common in news (since the policy change), personal stories (since I moved here), and analysis (since 2018). The follow-up clause typically describes an ongoing state or repeated pattern, not a single past event.

How to Think About It
自从 fences off a moment in the past and treats everything after it as a single 'since-zone.' The second clause then describes what the since-zone looks like — usually a continuing state or a repeated pattern. That's why a single one-off action in the second half feels off; the pattern wants ongoing or cumulative content. The 之后 is optional and often dropped, but adding it makes the boundary feel sharper.

Common Mistake
Learners follow 自从 with a one-time completed event in the second clause, but the pattern expects an ongoing change. Use a state verb, a repeated action, or a 一直 / 都 phrase to honor the 'since' framing.

Don't Confuse With
从... 开始
从...开始 marks a starting point neutrally ('starting from X'). 自从...之后 specifically says a lasting change began at that point.
...以后
以后 alone means 'after X.' 自从...之后 emphasizes that the speaker is reporting a change since then, with ongoing consequences.
自从...以来
Same pattern, more formal / written. Use 以来 in essays and news; 之后 reads more conversationally.
