Reach for this when you want to narrate a transformation — someone or something started as X and ended up as Y. '从 [BEFORE] 变成了 [AFTER]' literally says 'changed from BEFORE into AFTER.' The 了 marks the change as complete. Common in biographies, business writing, and political commentary where you want to highlight that the subject is no longer what it used to be.

How to Think About It
变成 is a resultative compound: 变 ('change') + 成 ('into / become') = 'change into.' The 从 bookend names the starting point; without it, '他变成了民粹主义者' just says what he became — no trajectory. Adding 从 turns a snapshot into a story: it forces the listener to compare before and after, and the 了 seals the change as already done.

Common Mistake
Learners drop the 成 and write '从...变了...' which is wrong — bare 变 doesn't take an explicit endpoint. The 成 ('into / become') is what licenses the second slot. Always write 变成 when you're naming what the subject turned into.

从...到...
从...到... = 'from X to Y,' marks a range or movement ('从北京到上海'). 从...变成了 specifically asserts a transformation in identity or state.

Bare 变成 just names what something turned into. Use 从...变成 only when the starting point is part of the story and worth highlighting.
由...转变为...
由...转变为... is the formal / written equivalent — favored in news, reports, and policy writing. 从...变成了 is colloquial and personal.
