Subject + 想 + Verb
Reach for this when you want to say someone WANTS to do something — 'I want to / would like to V.' 我想去北京. (I want to go to Beijing.) It's the most common way to express desires, plans, and hopes in Chinese. Use it for ordering ('I want to drink tea'), planning ('I want to learn Chinese'), and idle wishes ('I want to fly').
Structure
[SUBJECT] 想 [VERB] ([OBJECT])
[SUBJECT] xiǎng [VERB]
How to Think About It
想 + verb is 'want to V' — softer and more personal than 要 + verb ('intend to V / will V'). 我想吃 sounds like a gentle preference; 我要吃 sounds like a decision or even a demand. In a restaurant, polite customers say 我想要... or 我想点...; pushy ones say 我要.... Beginners often default to 要 because their textbooks introduce it first, but 想 is usually the friendlier choice.
Examples
我想喝水。
Wǒ xiǎng hē shuǐ.
I want to drink some water.
他想学开车。
Tā xiǎng xué kāichē.
He wants to learn to drive.
你想去哪里?
Nǐ xiǎng qù nǎlǐ?
Where do you want to go?
Common Mistake
Learners mix up 想 and 要 because both can translate to 'want.' But 想 + V = 'would like to V (a wish)'; 要 + V = 'will V / intend to V (a plan or demand).' Asking for something gently? Use 想. Setting a firm intention? Use 要.
我要去厕所吗?
我想去厕所。
Don't Confuse With
想 (alone) — to miss / think
想 by itself, without a following verb, means 'to miss' or 'to think.' 我想你 = 'I miss you.' 我想 + verb = 'I want to V.' If there's no verb after 想, the meaning shifts.
要 + Verb
要 + verb = 'will / intend to' — firmer, more decided. 我要走 = 'I'm leaving (decision made).' 我想走 = 'I'd like to leave (preference).' In requests, 想 is polite; 要 can sound demanding.
希望 + Clause
希望 = 'hope (that)' — takes a full clause, not just a verb. 我希望你来 = 'I hope you'll come.' 想 takes a verb directly. Use 希望 when wishing about someone else's actions, 想 when expressing your own desire.
