有的... 有的...
Use this when you want to break a group into sub-groups doing or being different things — 'some... some...' Picture a crowd in a park: 有的 in front of each verb or description splits the crowd into subsets. You can chain two, three, or more 有的 clauses. Common in descriptive writing about scenes, classrooms, markets, anything with mixed activity. The 的 nominalizes 有 into 'some [people/things].'
Structure
有的 [DOING A],有的 [DOING B]
yǒu de... yǒu de...
How to Think About It
Each 有的 implies 'some of them' — the listener already knows who 'them' refers to from earlier context. The pattern works only after you've named the larger group: '学生很多,有的在看书,有的在睡觉.' Skip the setup and 有的 sounds like it's floating with no antecedent. Think of it as labeling pie slices of a pie you've already shown.
Examples
教室里,有的学生在写字,有的学生在听老师讲课。
Jiàoshì lǐ, yǒu de xuésheng zài xiězì, yǒu de xuésheng zài tīng lǎoshī jiǎng kè.
In the classroom, some students are writing, some are listening to the teacher.
公园里的人有的跑步,有的散步。
Gōngyuán lǐ de rén yǒu de pǎobù, yǒu de sànbù.

Wǒ de tóngshì yǒu de huì shuō Zhōngwén, yǒu de bú huì.
Of my coworkers, some can speak Chinese, some can't.
Common Mistake
Learners use 有的 without first establishing the group, leaving the listener wondering 'some of what?' The pattern needs a prior reference — name the group, then split it.
有的喜欢咖啡,有的喜欢茶。
我朋友里,有的喜欢咖啡,有的喜欢茶。
Don't Confuse With
一些...一些...
Same idea, but 一些 is slightly more concrete ('some specific ones'). 有的 feels more sweeping and descriptive.
有的人...有的人...
Add 人 explicitly when the group is people in general (no prior context needed). Without 人, the group must already be on the table.
或者...或者...
或者 = 'or' between options. 有的...有的... = 'some... some...,' describing distinct subsets all at once. Different jobs.
