上网 (shàngwǎng) literally means 'get on the net' — to use the internet.
It is a separable verb-object compound (上 'get on' + 网 'net'), which means durations and frequencies split it: 上一会儿网 ('go online for a bit'), 上了三个小时的网 ('was online for three hours'). The word dates from the era when 'going online' was a discrete action — dialing up, sitting at a desktop.
In modern usage, when everyone is online constantly through phones, 上网 sounds a bit textbook-y; native speakers more often specify what they're doing (刷视频 'scrolling videos,' 玩游戏 'playing games,' 看新闻 'reading news') or use 用手机 / 玩手机. Still completely understood and used, especially for activities tied to a computer (网上购物 'online shopping,' 上网课 'attend online class').
Lưu ý: Slightly dated-sounding in 2026 — it originated when 'going online' was a deliberate act. Today younger speakers more often say 玩手机 (play on the phone), 刷手机 (scroll the phone), or name the specific app. 上网 still works and is the textbook standard.
