方法 (fāngfǎ) is the common Chinese noun for a 'method,' 'way,' or 'means' of doing something — the systematic approach or technique used to accomplish a task or solve a problem.
It is register-neutral and appears constantly in everyday speech, study, work, and science (学习方法 study methods, 工作方法 working methods, 科学方法 scientific method). Unlike English 'way,' which can also mean a physical road or direction, 方法 is abstract only — you never use 方法 for a route (that is 路 or 方向). It also differs from 办法 (bànfǎ): 方法 leans toward a technique or procedure, while 办法 leans toward a solution or workaround for a difficulty.
When someone asks 'how do you do this?', the answer is usually framed as 用什么方法 (what method to use).
