What is Everyday Chinese Slang?

Learning these is the fastest way to stop sounding like a textbook. Each entry gives the pinyin, the plain-English meaning, whether it is still current, and an example of how it lands in real conversation.

……基础，……就不基础 (… jī chǔ, … jiù bù jī chǔ) — A contrast formula: keep one half plain so the other half can do the talking. It started as a styling rule — a basic top with a statement bottom — and now gets applied to any deliberate ordinary-plus-extra pairing.

那咋了 (nà zǎ le) — A light "so what?" aimed at pressure and second-guessing. Less a snarl than a shrug: the point is refusing to spiral over what other people think.

蒜鸟 (suàn niǎo) — Wuhan-dialect 算了 ("let it go"), written as "garlic bird". Used to take the heat out of an argument — drop it, everyone has it hard enough.

拼好饭 (pīn hǎo fàn) — A heavily discounted group-order meal, and by extension any budget-survival meal. Note it is a real Meituan service name used like slang.

敬自己一杯 (jìng zì jǐ yì bēi) — Raising a glass to yourself for surviving something hard or hitting a small private win. Can be earnest or knowingly melodramatic.

搭子 (dā zi) — An activity buddy for one specific thing — a 饭搭子 (meal buddy), 咖啡搭子 (coffee buddy), 旅游搭子 (travel buddy). Lighter than a close friend.

松弛感 (sōng chí gǎn) — Composure under pressure — handling things calmly and treating yourself decently instead of tensing up. Praise for someone who does not look like they are gripping the wheel.

俺不中嘞 (ǎn bù zhòng le) — An internet phrase meaning "I am done / I cannot take it", assembled from Henan dialect. Worth knowing before you use it: Henan speakers generally find the construction stilted rather than authentic, and in real dialect 不中了 can describe someone in very bad physical shape. It is a meme voice, not a phrase to try on a Henan friend.

白人饭 (bái rén fàn) — A very plain, minimal, cold meal — raw carrots, plain bread, undressed salad. Used as self-mockery about one's own sad lunch.

你小子 (nǐ xiǎo zi) — Affectionate mock-scolding — "you rascal", "look at you". Expresses surprised approval, not a real insult in this use.

社恐 (shè kǒng) — Social anxiety — dreading small talk, parties, or phone calls. Used loosely and half-jokingly. Its opposite is 社牛, a social butterfly.

追更 (zhuī gēng) — To follow a serial as each new instalment drops — dramas, web novels, comics, or a creator's series.
