Learn Chinese vocabulary the way native speakers do — in context

Fluentide places you at the HSK level where you already understand 70-80% of the vocabulary, then introduces the next layer through real-news episodes. Every new word shows up with pinyin, an English gloss, and the episode where you heard it — so the meaning sticks without flashcard grinding.

What is Chinese vocabulary?

Chinese vocabulary is the set of words and phrases a learner needs to read, listen to, and speak Mandarin at a given level.

The HSK 3.0 syllabus organizes Chinese vocabulary into cumulative levels, and its new HSK 1–6 papers replace HSK 2.0 on 13 December 2026. HSK 1 covers 300 absolute-beginner words (greetings, numbers, family, basic daily life), HSK 2 500 cumulative words, HSK 3 1,000, HSK 4 2,000, HSK 5 about 3,600, HSK 6 about 5,400, and HSK 7–9 about 11,000.

Each Chinese word is written in characters (hanzi), pronounced according to pinyin with four tones plus a neutral tone, and paired with a measure word when it counts. Functional daily conversation begins around 1,200 words (between HSK 3 and 4); comfortable newspaper reading takes 3,000-5,000 words (HSK 5-6).

Most consistent learners reach about 1,200 words in 12-18 months of daily study, and about 5,000 in 3-5 years.
